Most people refer to book reviews before buying a
book or series written by a particular author. Book reviews are perhaps
the most subjective of all reviews available, but generally provide a
wealth of information regarding content and story features. Book reviews
are especially helpful for the avid reader looking to catch up on the
latest news regarding their favorite author.
Book reviews have several features in common. Most
refer to the general plot of a novel or short story, the books relation to
other works in a series (if any) and a comparison of the work to like
minded features. Testimonials sometimes accompany works of non fiction.
Book reviews sometimes also sometimes include author
commentaries which are valuable to avid fans. Reviews may be categorized
according to specialty or subject matter; for example, horror, suspense, romance, health, self-improvement may all be categorized
separately. Alternatively book reviews may be categorized less
specifically. In the above example, horror and suspense may be grouped
with mystery for example. Romance reviews might be more generally
categorized in a sub-set of fiction works.
Any genre of writing might be included and reviewed
by serious critics; no serious (and even not so serious) creative work of
genius might consider itself excluded. Even cookbooks are known to be
reviewed. When examining a book review, consider the reviewer and their
credentials. A chef or restaurant owner for example, would be a strong
candidate to review cookbooks, but may not be that credible at reviewing
romance novels.
Book reviews should specific in nature. A quality
review will include adequate insight into a subject. The reader should
come away feeling as though they learned something not only about the book
itself, but also about the author and about the opinions of other
readers. Generally a book review can be trusted with confidence if the
author is knowledgeable and the book has sold well. Most books on the
best sellers list, for example, fit this criteria.
